Most freight is a booking. Project cargo is a plan. The difference isn’t just size — it’s that the shipment can’t be handed to a standard process and tracked by a number. It has to be engineered: measured, routed, permitted, and sequenced so that a dozen things that each have their own lead time all arrive ready at the same moment.
What makes freight “project cargo”
Freight crosses into project territory when it stops fitting the container system or the routine schedule:
- Too large — it won’t fit inside a standard container, so it ships out-of-gauge on flat racks and open tops, or as breakbulk directly in the hold.
- Too heavy — beyond ordinary handling, needing a heavy-lift plan and rated cranes.
- Too complex — one piece, high value, on a fixed deadline, where a rollover or a wrong turn isn’t a delay but a failed project.
Think excavators and loaders, cranes, generators and transformers, presses, industrial plant, mining and construction equipment. The common thread: the freight dictates the method, not the other way around.
The three legs, and why they interlock
A project move is usually three problems that have to be solved as one:
- Ocean. Out-of-gauge on flat rack or open top, breakbulk in the hold, or RoRo up a ramp — the method decision is its own guide. Each carries different lead times, cutoffs and lashing requirements.
- Inland heavy haul. Getting the piece from port to site on a lowboy, with oversize permits, a route survey and escorts — covered here.
- The schedule. Vessel cutoffs, per-state permit lead times, crane availability and the site’s receiving window all have to converge.
They interlock because a decision in one leg constrains the others. The route survey can rule out a trailer that changes the ocean stow. A permit’s lead time can decide the sailing you must catch. Solve them separately and the seams are where projects fail.
Why one coordinator has to own it
The single biggest predictor of a project move going well isn’t the rate — it’s whether one person owns the critical path. When the ocean is booked by one vendor, the heavy haul by another, and the permits by a third, no one is holding the whole timeline. The DG desk doesn’t know the machine is over-width; the heavy-haul team doesn’t know the vessel cutoff moved.
Run as one file, the trade-offs get made on purpose: what to ship how, which sailing the permits allow, when the crane has to be on site. That’s the difference between an engineered move and a sequence of hopeful hand-offs.
