Glossary / Project & heavy cargo

Breakbulk

Also: break bulk · general cargo

Cargo shipped individually — crated, skidded, drummed or as bare machinery — rather than in a container, loaded and lashed directly in the vessel’s hold. Breakbulk is the route for pieces too big or heavy for even flat racks and open tops, using the ship’s own gear or shore cranes. It trades containerized convenience for the ability to move almost anything, and needs careful stowage, securing and often a heavy-lift plan.
