The ocean voyage gets the attention; the last hundred miles cause the delays. Once an oversized machine is discharged at the port, getting it to the site is a project in itself — the right trailer, permits from every state it crosses, a route that its dimensions can actually pass, and escorts where the law requires. Here’s how an inland heavy haul comes together, and where the schedule really lives.
The trailer decides what’s possible
Over-dimensional machinery doesn’t ride on a standard flatbed. The workhorse is the lowboy, or RGN — a low-deck trailer whose gooseneck detaches so equipment can drive straight on. The low deck does two jobs: it keeps a tall load within permittable height, and it drops the centre of gravity for stability. For the heaviest pieces, multi-axle configurations spread the weight to stay within per-axle limits and bridge ratings.
Getting the trailer right is upstream of everything else — it sets the loaded height and weight that the permits and route survey then have to accommodate.
Permits: per-state, and the real bottleneck
Any load over legal size or weight needs an oversize/overweight permit — and permits are issued per state. A haul crossing three states needs three permits, each with its own rules, allowed travel times, and lead time. The largest loads — superloads — can trigger bridge analysis and utility coordination, adding weeks.
This is the point shippers most often miss: permit lead time, not truck availability, is usually the binding constraint. You can have a trailer and a driver ready and still wait on a state permit. On a project schedule, the permit clock has to start early, in parallel with the ocean leg — not after the box lands.
The route survey comes before the permit
Before a route can be permitted, it has to be proven passable. A route survey checks the planned path for the things that stop an oversized load: bridge clearances and load ratings, overhead power and comms lines, turn radii, road widths, and weight-restricted or under-construction structures. For the biggest moves it’s a physical drive-through with measurements.
The survey decides two things: whether the route is viable at all, and what it will require — escorts, pole cars to lift or hold utility lines, police accompaniment, or night-only travel. Skipping or rushing it is how a load ends up stopped at a low bridge with no legal way forward.
Escorts and travel restrictions
Depending on the load and the states, a permitted move may need pilot/escort vehicles front and rear, height poles, or police escort through certain stretches. Travel is often restricted to daylight, off-peak, or specific days, and banned in some conditions. These aren’t optional extras — they’re conditions written into the permit, and moving without them voids it.
Loading and securing
The machine has to be loaded and lashed to hold through the whole haul — chains and binders rated to the load, blocking against roll and slide, and a tie-down plan that matches the trailer. For a fuelled or battery-powered machine, remember it’s also dangerous goods, so fuel and battery handling rules apply on the road too.
