Fixing cargo against movement in transit — chains, straps, welded stoppers, blocking and dunnage — engineered to the forces the load will see at sea or on the road. On flat racks, breakbulk and heavy lift, correct lashing is a safety and acceptance requirement, not a formality: inadequate securing is grounds for a carrier to refuse the load, and a shifted load in a hold endangers the whole shipment.
