Detention
A charge for keeping the carrier’s container outside the terminal — at your dock or yard — longer than the free time allowed. Where demurrage is about the box sitting inside the port, detention is about the box (and often the chassis) sitting with you after it has been picked up. It is billed per container, per day. Booking enough unloading time and returning empties promptly is what keeps detention off the invoice.
