The daily rate a carrier charges for use of its equipment beyond free time. In US import practice "per diem" and "detention" are often used interchangeably for the container, while chassis providers bill their own per-diem for the chassis. Either way it is a per-day meter running against a piece of equipment you are holding — the way to control it is to unload and return promptly, not to argue the rate.
