HS code

Also: HS code · HTS · tariff code

The Harmonized System code — an internationally standardized number that classifies a product for customs. The first six digits are common worldwide; importing countries extend them (in the US, to the 10-digit HTS) to set the exact duty rate and any special requirements. The HS code drives duty, eligibility for trade programs, and which government agencies must clear the goods, so getting it right is worth real money.
