The process of getting imported goods released by the customs authority: filing the entry, declaring value and classification, paying duties and taxes, and satisfying any partner-agency requirements (FDA, EPA, DOT and others). Clearance can be started before the vessel arrives so release lines up with discharge — the alternative is a container sitting at the terminal accruing demurrage while paperwork catches up.
