Bill of lading (B/L)

The core ocean shipping document, issued by the carrier, that does three jobs at once: a receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage, and — for an original "negotiable" B/L — a document of title that must be surrendered to release the cargo. Getting the consignee, notify party and description right on the B/L is what keeps release smooth at destination.
